Our Breeding Philosophy at Driftless Shilohs in Wisconsin.
Our approach to ethical breeding: prioritizing health, temperament, and preserving try Shiloh Shepherd standard.
At Driftless Shilohs, our breeding program is deeply rooted in the visionary legacy of Tina Barber, the founder of the Shiloh Shepherd breed. Inspired by her childhood memories of robust, reliable shepherds in Germany, Tina developed the Shiloh in the 1970s as a gentler, more stable alternative to the high-drive German Shepherd Dog. She aimed to create dogs that embodied health, intelligence, empathy, and a family-oriented temperament—qualities we are committed to preserving and advancing.
We prioritize health above all. Every breeding decision incorporates comprehensive health screenings, including OFA certifications for hips and elbows, cardiac evaluations and temperament testing.
We selectively breed for calm, gentle natures that make Shilohs ideal for homes with children, the elderly, or those seeking emotional support animals. Our dogs are highly trainable, with an innate intelligence and eagerness to please. They retain the protective instincts of their shepherd heritage—alert and devoted guardians who watch over their families without unnecessary aggression.
